The star has given the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the Britain's grassroots music venues.

The star was given the prize on mid-October as his third album the album was named the top album of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their ticket prices, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting more than £100,000 on his recent tour to help 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation supported locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues stemming from flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations obtained monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from shows in big venues backs the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his award prize money to worthy causes.

When Pulp received the prize in the mid-90s for their release their work, lead singer the singer announced that the band would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, artist she split her award between several charities, such as the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they needed updated gear," she explained to the media.

Previously, they donated their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their act, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year they contributed their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked vocalist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had protected two small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in that location were purchased under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by the arts council and music fans who buy "shares" in the venues.
