Senate Greenlights Measure to Make Public Jeffrey Epstein Documents

The Senate on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The administration changed course after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a massive majority.

The public have waited long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before asking the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Let transparency reign.”

Next Steps

The bill next will be sent to the president for his approval. The president signaled on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although the president has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the authorities' approach of the Epstein case as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the past few days, and stated he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with survivors of Epstein and their advocates who were watching from a public section, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The sole “no” vote came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he was concerned the measure would make public specific data of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
